Fluid coupings transfers the power or torque from the prime mover to the driven machine by means of a fluid medium . Since there is no mechanical connection between the input and out putmembers, the power is transmitted smoothly, absorbing the shock loads inherent in many driven equipment.
The motor starts free of load, accelerates towards max torque condition where the current demand is relatively low, the max torque that can be transmitted through fluid coupling does not exceeds 200%of nominal motor torque. Due to this, low priced squirrel cage motor can be used in place of a specially wound motor.
